The Master’s research paper is devoted to the study of translation methods and classification of English proper names and their Ukrainian and Russian translations, as well as to their origin.
The empiric material of the research includes English, Ukrainian and Russia proper names selected from the mentioned novel. The sample size comprises 115 lexical units.
The research paper allowed to generalize the essence of the concepts "onomastics" and "etymology" and to characterize the types of onyms, types of their origin and methods of translation into Ukrainian and Russian. It was determined that the largest percentage of onyms are proper names of people – anthroponyms. The method of loan translation turned out to be more common for the Ukrainian translation, while the Russian translation was more focused on transcription. As for the origin, English text mainly consists of specific vocabulary, namely its own subtype. The borrowing from English is more common for the text in Russian language.
