The master’s thesis considers the techniques that are used in the translation of artistic, religious and historical names into Ukrainian, Russian and German, it highlights their semantics and type of origin.
The material of the research includes the artistic, religious and historical names in English, Ukrainian, Russian and German, which are selected from Dan Brown’s book “The Da Vinci Code”, and its translations into the aforementioned languages.
The study has revealed that most often such names are translated using the direct equivalent in the language of translation. The most frequently used transformations are concretization (in the Ukrainian translation), approximate translation (in the Russian version), loan translation (in the German translation).
The largest number of polysemantic units is found in English – 45%, the smallest – in German – 25%. From the point of view of origin, German has a larger number of the cognate vocabulary – 61%, while in English – 50%. Most of the vocabulary is occupied by words of the own type, formed in the language by combining two stems / words. Most borrowings are taken from Greek and Latin.
